Stop by some of our latest issues:

Drive Safely

We often associate rest stops with roadside safety, a space where drivers are able to make pit stops en route to their destination. Along the interstate routes of California, however, rest stops hold special significance: they are named in honor of transportation workers.

According to the California Department of Transportation (known as Caltrans), since 1921, 193 transportation workers have lost their lives in the line of duty. Every Workers’ Memorial Day, Caltrans honors their memory by including their names on a plaque in the lobby of the Caltrans Headquarters in Sacramento.

While on a canvassing road trip to the Sun Belt this past weekend, our group stopped at the Jaime Obeso Sunbeam Rest Area (as pictured above). Jaime Obeso was a 53-year-old Maintenance Leadworker in District 11 who began his career with Caltrans in September 1989, serving the Department over 21 years. On June 7, 2011, he was killed by a motorist while working in Imperial County.

With this naming practice, Caltrans honors the service of their workers and gives drivers and policymakers a poignant reminder: be mindful of the presence of highway workers along the interstate.
